New Year New You | 2020 Skin Care Guide

You’ve no doubt got big ideas for the new year. Drink less, get fitter, maybe you’re even following the Veganuary train? Perhaps you want to get yourself in shape for the summer festival season, or you’ve got a few trips to Ibiza planned and you’re wanting to cut before then? All of this is great, but have you thought about your skin? Lads… it’s time to talk skin care.

Skin care should be an important part of your daily routine. Keeping on top of how your skin looks can help to ensure your skin stays clean and clear from breakouts. It’s hygienic and it’s going to give your skin a healthy glow. Note however, none of this means you have to spend loads of cash on expensive serums, it just means you should start devoting a bit of time to making sure your skin is clean and well looked after.

By the way, for the purposes of this, we’re focusing on the face… there’s no need to put toner on your knees lads.

So, how do I care for my skin?

It’s a day and night job, just like brushing your teeth. There are a few steps you should take each morning however these steps may change depending on the condition of your skin (whether its oily, dry, you have acne etc).

In the morning:

Clean, Tone, Treat, Moisturise and Protect.

At night:

Clean, Tone, Treat and Moisturise.

It’s that simple.


Clean your skin using water and a gentle cleanser, don’t use anything that’s full of harsh chemicals, just a simple sensitive skin wash should do the trick. Do this twice a day, once in the morning and once before you go to bed.


Toning helps to rebalance the pH of your skin. There are loads of toners on the market, created to help treat a range of skin types. Shop around and find a toner that is gentle and don’t get fooled into buying something too expensive, you simply don’t need to. Once again, use a toner on your face in the morning, and before you go to bed.


This is where your own skin type is important, you should treat any skin conditions (like acne) twice a day. If you’re ever concerned about your skin, see a doctor or a dermatologist who will be able to advise you on the best course of treatment. Face washes, face masks, serums and more can be used at this stage. Remember, this should also happen twice a day.


This does what it says on the tin. Use a non-greasy moisturiser to help trap moisture in the skin to keep it feeling fresh. Make sure you rub the moisturiser in, otherwise you’ll be left with a shiny face and nobody wants that. Once again, do this when you get up, and just before bed.


Unlike the other stages, this only happens in the morning. You should make sure you keep your skin protected from the elements. Applying facial sun cream is a great way to slow down ageing and to protect the skin from harmful UV rays, even in the winter. Ensure your sun cream protects from both UVA and UVB rays.

It might sound like a lot of work, but caring for your skin will help you look better and feel more confident. If you ever have any concerns about the condition of your skin, speak to a doctor, otherwise a set and healthy skin care routine should be enough to keep you on top of your game. If you only make one change this year, make sure this is it.
